Long before MH370, there was the vanishing of Boeing 727, tail number N844AA. On May 25, 2003, as the sun dipped below the horizon in Luanda, Angola, the massive, unpainted silver airliner suddenly began taxiing down the runway. It had no clearance. Its lights were completely blacked out. Its transponder was dead. Onboard were an American flight engineer, Ben Padilla, and a hired mechanic, John Mutantu—neither of whom were certified to fly the three-man aircraft. The plane took off into the twilight, headed southwest over the Atlantic Ocean, and vanished into thin air. Coming just twenty months after 9/11, the rogue plane triggered a frantic, global hunt by the FBI and CIA for what they feared was a flying bomb. More than two decades later, not a single piece of debris, oil slick, or trace of the two men has ever been found. Did it crash into the dark ocean, or was it stolen to order by international shadows? Tonight, we step into the cockpit of aviation's most haunting ghost story.
